Breaststroke - also commonly known as frog style in Singapore, holds a significant position in the world of swimming.

This swimming technique is one of the oldest styles recorded in the annals of swimming history, with its origins tracing back several centuries. It is characterized by a unique and symmetrical arm pull combined with a leg kick action that closely mimics the natural swimming motion of a frog. The rhythm of breaststroke is distinct, involving a simultaneous movement of the arms and legs, which creates a smooth, gliding motion through the water. While it is recognized as the slowest of the four competitive swimming strokes—namely freestyle, backstroke, butterfly, and breaststroke—it remains one of the most widely practiced and accessible swim strokes for beginners. Its straightforward mechanics make it relatively easy to learn initially, allowing many individuals, including children, to feel comfortable in the water quickly.

However, mastering the breaststroke involves more than just the basic movements. Effective swimming with this stroke encompasses a variety of techniques that can range from simple gliding in the water to more advanced skills. For instance, swimmers can choose between different kicking techniques, such as the whip kick and the wedge kick. The whip kick, characterized by a circular motion of the legs, is often favored for its efficiency and speed, while the wedge kick, which involves a more straightforward, less dynamic motion, may be easier for novices. Additionally, the angle of the arm pull is crucial for maximizing the effectiveness of the stroke; an optimal arm pull can significantly enhance the swimmer's ability to lift themselves out of the water and generate propulsion, allowing for a more powerful and efficient stroke. Understanding these technicalities is essential for swimmers who wish to improve their performance and efficiency in the water.

This month of March, our focus is on the breaststroke, which we have designated as our main swim stroke of the month. Our goal is to provide a comprehensive and engaging learning experience for all participants. We hope that kids, regardless of their age or current competency level, will have the be able to pick up this essential swimming technique and become somewhat proficient in it by the end of the month. Through structured lessons, practice sessions, and personalized feedback, we aim to instill confidence in our young swimmers, enabling them to enjoy the water safely and effectively while developing their skills in breaststroke.
