Swim clinic - Mar 2025

This month's swim clinic has once again proven to us that incorporating video feedback for our students significantly enhances their ability to visualize and understand their movements in the water. The use of video in the clinic allowed swimmers to gain insights into their technique that they might not perceive in real-time during their practice sessions. By capturing their strokes, kicks, and overall body positioning on film, students are afforded a unique opportunity to see their performance from an outside perspective, which is invaluable for their development.


In particular, this month, students were especially enthusiastic about the video feedback when we gathered at the pavilion to review the captured footage together. The excitement in the air was palpable as they watched their own swimming techniques on the screen, and many expressed surprise at what they saw. The ability to pause, rewind, and analyze specific moments in their swims allowed them to engage in a deeper understanding of their movements. Each student had the chance to see not only their strengths but also areas that required improvement, which sparked lively discussions among peers, parents and coaches alike. This collaborative environment fostered a sense of camaraderie and motivation, as students encouraged each other to strive for better performance.


While our review sessions were brief, we were able to discern the significant differences between the various movements of the kicks. For instance, we noted the distinction between legs that were merely "shaking" in the water—often resulting in minimal propulsion—and those that exhibited effective kicking techniques that propelled the swimmer forward with purpose and efficiency. This observation led to fruitful discussions about the importance of technique over sheer effort, highlighting how proper form can lead to more effective swimming outcomes. The visual evidence from the footage made it clear to the students that small adjustments in their kicking could lead to substantial improvements in their overall speed and performance in the water.


However, it became evident that more emphasis would be required for the coaches in class to pinpoint the errors and flag them out concurrently as the students swim. By providing real-time feedback is crucial for enhancing the learning experience, allowing students to make immediate corrections rather than waiting for post-session analysis, our coaches can help students to develop a more acute awareness of their movements as they occur, reinforcing the lessons learned during video review. This dual approach—combining immediate feedback with reflective analysis—will undoubtedly lead to a more effective learning environment, where students can not only correct their mistakes but also build confidence in their swimming abilities. As we look forward to future clinics, implementing these strategies will be essential in maximizing the potential of every swimmer in our program.
